Answer script digitisation

Answer scripts are the hardest documents an institution owns: unfamiliar handwriting, cramped margins, crossings-out, mixed scripts, and a roll number that must never attach to the wrong paper. Content Factory digitises them under NDA, with identity and marks treated as data that cannot be guessed at.

What is extracted

Identity, answers and marks, kept apart

An answer script carries three different kinds of information, and they are handled differently.

Identity block

Roll number, register number, subject code and date. Read digit by digit and double-keyed, never inferred.

Answer body

The student’s text, transcribed as written, with the question number it answers.

Marks and evaluation

Per-question marks, totals and examiner remarks, transcribed as entered and totalled back to check.

Crossings-out

Struck-through text marked as struck, not silently dropped or silently kept.

Blank and partial answers

Recorded as blank or partial rather than skipped, so the count matches the paper.

Diagrams

Kept as images against the question number, with any labels transcribed.

Why handwriting is priced differently

What a reader catches that software cannot

Handwriting recognition on an unknown hand in a regional script is not a solved problem. Our workflow puts a person on the page.

  • Unfamiliar individual hands, with no training sample
  • Cursive and joined regional scripts
  • Mixed script in one sentence, English terms inside Tamil or Hindi prose
  • Spelling the student got wrong, which must be preserved not corrected
  • Overwritten and re-inked characters

Languages

Only languages we can verify

Fifteen languages are read natively in house, and a page is only signed off by someone who reads it. Where a script is outside that list we say so before you commit rather than returning machine output.

Questions we are asked

Frequently asked

Can you capture only roll numbers and marks?

Yes. Identity and marks capture without the answer text is much cheaper and is the most common request from examination sections.

Do you correct the student’s spelling?

No. The transcription reproduces what the student wrote. Corrections would change what is being evaluated.

What happens to words nobody can read?

They are flagged in the file with the page and position, never guessed. You decide what to do with them.

Can you work inside our evaluation system?

We deliver in the format your system imports, including CSV or JSON against your schema. We do not require access to the system itself.

How is student data protected?

NDA first, named readers only, no subcontracting, and deletion on your written instruction after handover.
