Why you need two résumés in Mumbai, and how they differ
A résumé submitted through a portal and a résumé emailed to a hiring manager by a colleague are read by different readers under different conditions. One is parsed by software and then searched; the other is read on a phone by a person who has already decided to be interested.
Optimising for both in one file means compromising on each. Two versions, built from the same facts, costs an hour and removes the compromise.
The applied version
Built for the parser. Single column, standard headings, contact details in the body, month-and-year dates, real job titles, terms taken from the advertisement, nothing carrying information as a graphic.
Plain to look at, and that is correct. Nobody is judging its appearance at the stage it has to survive.
The referred version
Built for a person. A stronger summary at the top, because it is read rather than searched. Tighter, more confident prose. Some visual hierarchy. Possibly a one-page format even where the applied version runs to two.
And a filename with your name in it, because it will be forwarded.
What must not differ
Every fact. Dates, titles, scope, numbers, employers. Two versions with inconsistent facts is how a candidate ends up explaining a discrepancy to a verification team.
Keep one master document with the facts and produce both from it. When something changes, change the master.
A third version, sometimes
For specific senior applications, a one-page summary aimed at a named role. Not a résumé — a page arguing why you for this, with three pieces of evidence.
Mumbai family businesses and mid-market firms respond to this unusually well, because it reads as considered rather than circulated.
