What actually happens to your resume in the first thirty seconds

A Mumbai recruiter with 340 applications for one role is not selecting. They are discarding, as fast as defensibly possible, down to a number they can actually interview. Understanding that sequence is worth more than any amount of writing advice.

Nothing personal is happening. The document has about thirty seconds to survive four decisions.

Decision one: does it parse and appear in the search

Before a human is involved, the file has to reach the database intact and contain the terms being searched. Most applications that vanish without acknowledgement failed here, and it is a formatting problem.

Decision two: the top third

A recruiter reads the top third of page one: current title, current employer, scale, and the summary. If none of that matches the brief, the document is closed. Everything below page one’s halfway point is read only by candidates who have already survived.

This is why the summary matters and why burying your scale on page two is expensive.

Decision three: the disqualifiers

• Notice period longer than the role can wait for
• Location mismatch with no stated willingness to move
• Salary expectation outside the band, where stated
• A gap or short tenure with no explanation
• A missing licence, registration or certification the role requires

Each of these is checked quickly and each is a hard stop. Most are addressable in one line, which is the cheapest improvement available to any candidate.

Decision four: is there one thing worth a conversation

If the document survives to this point, the recruiter is looking for a single item they can mention when advocating for you internally. One quantified achievement, one recognisable client, one relevant scale figure.

This is what a resume is genuinely for: giving somebody a sentence to repeat on your behalf.
