Most Mumbai jobs come through referrals. Write the résumé for that

A large share of Mumbai hiring happens through referral, and a referred résumé is read in a completely different context from an applied one. Someone inside the company has already vouched for you. The document’s job is no longer to win attention — it is to justify the person who took a small risk on your behalf.

That changes what it needs to do. It has to be forwardable, immediately clear about level and fit, and easy for your advocate to describe in a sentence they will actually say.

Give your advocate a sentence

The person referring you has to describe you to a hiring manager in one line, usually verbally, usually in passing. If your résumé does not supply that line, they will invent one, and it will be weaker than yours.

The summary at the top is that sentence. “Twelve years in BFSI operations, currently running a team of forty at a private bank, looking for a transformation role” can be repeated by anyone who read it once.

Make it forwardable

It will be emailed, in a file, possibly opened on a phone. That means a sensible filename with your name in it, a file size that sends, no password protection, and a layout that holds up on a small screen.

A file called “Resume_final_v4.pdf” arriving from a colleague is a small friction, and small frictions matter when someone is doing you a favour between meetings.

Level and fit, unambiguously

A referral usually skips the recruiter, which means the hiring manager reads it without a requisition in mind. They are deciding whether there is a role for you at all.

So state the level and the kind of role you want. A referred résumé that leaves the reader guessing what you are for wastes the referral, because nobody creates a role for an ambiguity.

Do not treat it as informal

A referred document is read more carefully rather than less, because your advocate’s judgement is also being assessed. Errors, inflated claims and a casual register all cost more here than in a cold application.

The same discipline applies: numbers with a basis, scope stated, everything defensible when the hiring manager asks the person who referred you whether it is accurate.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. A referral is the most valuable route into a Mumbai employer, and the most commonly wasted by a document that does not tell the advocate what to say.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Mumbai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
