Working in a Mumbai family business, then applying elsewhere
Mumbai is full of family businesses, and people who have worked in one — their own or someone else’s — face a specific problem when applying to a professionally managed company. The reader’s unspoken question is whether the role was real and whether the person has worked to a process.
This is unfair, because family-business roles are frequently broader and more demanding than the equivalent corporate position. But the question is asked, and the résumé has to answer it.
Establish the business
One clause: sector, revenue, headcount, how many locations, how long established. Without this the reader cannot tell whether you ran something substantial or helped in a shop, and will assume the smaller.
If revenue is confidential, give a band. “A 180 to 220 crore textile trading and manufacturing business, 340 staff across three units” settles the question in one line.
Scope where there was no title
Family business roles often have no formal designation or a grand one that means little. Describe the function instead: what you decided, what you signed, who reported to you, what you were accountable for.
“Ran purchasing and vendor management for the whole group, approving 40 crore of annual spend, with four staff reporting” is clearer than any title.
Answer the process question
Point at anything systematic you introduced or operated. An ERP implementation, a costing system, audited accounts, ISO certification, formalised HR processes, a board or advisory structure.
This is the specific reassurance a professionally managed employer is looking for, and most family-business candidates have something to point at.
If it is your own family’s business
Say so plainly. Concealing it is worse, because it emerges in the first interview and then the concealment becomes the issue.
And answer why you are leaving. “Wanting to work in a larger structured organisation before taking on more at home” is a real and respected answer in Mumbai. Silence invites the assumption that there was a family dispute.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. Family business records nearly always need the scale of the business added, because the candidate assumes the reader knows and the reader does not.
Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.
The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.
Mumbai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
