Does anyone in Mumbai read cover letters? Sometimes, and it matters when they do

The honest answer is that most Mumbai recruiters do not read cover letters, and most hiring managers do. Since the recruiter screens first, the letter rarely wins you a first look — but in the situations where a human being is deciding between three shortlisted candidates, it frequently decides which one.

That makes it worth writing in specific circumstances rather than as a habit. Knowing which circumstances saves a great deal of effort.

When it is worth writing

Four situations, all of which share one feature: your application carries a question the résumé cannot answer.

  • A career change — the reason for the move needs room to be argued
  • A speculative approach where no role is advertised
  • A senior role, where the hiring manager reads applications personally
  • Anything with a visible anomaly — a gap, a relocation, a step back in seniority

Outside those, a letter adds little and a bad one subtracts. A generic letter that could have been sent to any Mumbai company demonstrates precisely the lack of effort the reader suspects.

Three paragraphs, one page

Why them, specifically, with something about their situation that your record speaks to. What you bring, with one piece of evidence rather than three claims. What you propose next.

The commonest failure is opening with “I am writing to apply for the position of”, which spends the strongest sentence on the page telling the reader something they already know.

Answer the objection

Every application has one. The letter is where it is addressed in your own words, before the reader constructs their own explanation — which is always less generous than the truth.

One or two sentences. A letter that dwells on a weakness makes it larger than it was.

Speculative letters are a different document

With no advertisement there is no brief, so the letter must supply its own: a problem you can see in their business, and a specific reason you are the person for it.

These work in Mumbai more often than people expect, particularly in family businesses and mid-market firms that do not advertise. But they have to be specific — a speculative letter that reads as a mass mailing is filed immediately.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. We include the letter with every career change and senior commission, and supply the framework so the next twenty can be produced at the same standard.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Mumbai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
