Applying from Hyderabad to the United States: the résumé and the visa question
Hyderabad sends more people to the United States than almost any other Indian city, and most applications fail on format before they are read on merit. The American résumé convention is narrower than the Indian one, and several things that are standard here are disqualifying there.
The second problem is comprehension. A US hiring manager may not know what a well-known Hyderabad employer is, what a first-class degree means, or how a designation maps to their own levels. Experience they cannot interpret reads as an unknown quantity.
Remove what US employers do not expect
All of this is standard on Indian résumés and wrong for a US application:
- Photograph, date of birth, marital status, gender, nationality
- Father’s or husband’s name
- The declaration paragraph and signature
- Current salary and expected CTC
- Passport number and permanent address
Some of these are unlawful for a US employer to consider, which means a résumé carrying them creates an administrative problem for the recruiter. Several companies discard such applications for that reason alone.
One page, and the format
One page to roughly eight or ten years of experience. Plain, single column, no tables, standard headings, month-and-year dates, US spelling.
Contact details as city and state, phone with the country code, and a professional email. An Indian address in full is unnecessary and takes space that evidence needs.
Explain your employers and your degree
One clause per employer — sector, scale, position in market. “A top-five Indian IT services firm, 240,000 staff” costs eight words and converts an unknown name into a known quantity.
For education, name the degree and add a line of context where the grading system differs. A first-class B.Tech from a well-regarded institution means nothing to a US reader without translation.
State the visa position plainly
Near the top. Whether you require H-1B sponsorship, hold an existing visa, are in the lottery, or need cap-exempt sponsorship. Employers screen on this within the first few seconds.
Ambiguity is read as a complication. A candidate who states “requires H-1B sponsorship; not currently in the US” is at least in the correct pile, which is better than being discarded as unclear.
