Big Four and consulting résumés in Delhi: engagements, not employers
A consulting résumé is read as a list of engagements, not a list of employers. Four years at a Big Four firm tells a reader almost nothing; four years across three sectors on eleven engagements with named capabilities tells them what you can be staffed on.
Delhi has the largest concentration of government and public-sector consulting in India, which adds a second axis: whether your work has been private-sector commercial or public-sector advisory. These are different markets and the vocabulary differs.
The engagement sheet
One line per engagement, with the facts a staffing partner needs:
- Client sector and rough size, named where permitted
- Capability — strategy, operations, technology, risk, tax, transactions
- Engagement length and team size
- Your role — analyst, consultant, workstream lead, engagement manager
- The outcome, in the client’s terms rather than the deliverable’s
Deliverables are not outcomes. “Produced an operating model” is activity; “operating model adopted, reducing approval cycle from nine days to three” is a result.
Sold, led, delivered
Three distinct claims, and consulting readers separate them instantly. Whether you originated the work, ran it, or worked within it defines your level more accurately than your grade does.
Proposal and pursuit work belongs on the document once you are senior: proposals written, win rate, value of work won. That is the evidence for a manager-grade hire.
Public sector and government advisory
Delhi-specific and valuable. Ministry and PSU engagements, multilateral-funded programmes, policy support, tender and procurement advisory.
State the funder and the client type, because a World Bank-funded programme and a state government assignment involve different processes. Candidates with real government delivery experience are scarcer than the market appears.
Moving from consulting into industry
The translation is the whole problem. Advisory language reads as detached to an operating hiring manager, and “advised on” is heard as “did not own”.
Rewrite each engagement in ownership terms wherever it is true — what was implemented, what you ran, what changed and stayed changed after you left. And answer the question directly in the cover letter, because every industry interviewer asks why you are leaving consulting.
