Returning to work in Chennai after a break: the résumé that gets read

A career break is not the obstacle most people assume. What costs interviews is the attempt to hide it — shifting to year-only dates, a functional format with no chronology, a vague “consulting” entry covering three years. Chennai recruiters spot each of these within seconds, and every one converts a fact they would have accepted into a question about what is being concealed.

Stated plainly, in one line, in the chronology, the break occupies one line of the reader’s attention. That is the entire technique, and it works far better than the alternatives.

One line, in the timeline

“Career break — family care, March 2022 to June 2025” sits in the chronology like any other entry. It answers the question before it is asked and removes it from the conversation.

Keep month-and-year dates throughout. Switching to years only during the break is the most transparent concealment technique there is.

Evidence that you did not stop

This is what actually changes the outcome. Anything counts, and most people have more than they credit:

  • A course or certification completed, however short
  • Freelance or part-time work, even occasional
  • A family business you helped run, formally or otherwise
  • Committee, school or community responsibility
  • Professional membership kept current
  • Reading and self-study, if you can point to something produced

A current certification taken in the last six months does more to answer the currency question than any amount of explanation.

Restore the pre-break record

Your experience before the break is still your experience. Most returning candidates compress eight strong years into four lines, as though it had expired.

It has not. Write it at full weight, with the scope and numbers, exactly as you would have when you left.

Returnship programmes

Several large Chennai employers — in IT services, banking and the global capability centres — run formal return-to-work programmes. They screen on different criteria from standard recruitment and are designed precisely for this situation.

If you are targeting those, the résumé is written to their criteria rather than to a general one. It is worth finding out which employers in your sector run them before applying anywhere.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. We write the gap as a line and then spend the rest of the document on the record. The interview answer comes with it, written down, because it will be asked.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
