The designed résumé template that is costing Chennai candidates interviews

A candidate downloads a handsome two-column template, fills it carefully, and applies to thirty positions in Chennai. Nothing comes back. The document looks better than anything the successful candidates submitted, and that is precisely the problem.

Applicant tracking systems read files in a linear order. A two-column layout interleaves the columns as it reads, producing a garbled record where a job title from the left column sits beside a skill from the right. The recruiter searching the database never finds you.

What breaks, specifically

These are the elements that fail, in rough order of how often we see them:

  • Two-column layouts — experience lands in the wrong field or nowhere
  • Text boxes — frequently skipped entirely by parsers
  • Tables used for layout — cell contents read in an unpredictable order
  • Contact details in a header or footer — often not read at all
  • Icons in place of labels — a phone glyph is not the word “phone”
  • Skill bars and rating graphics — carry no text and convey nothing
  • Creative section headings — “My Journey” does not map to “Experience”

Each of these is a design choice that makes the document less readable to the only reader that matters first.

What a clean document looks like

Single column. Standard headings — Summary, Experience, Education, Skills. Contact details in the body at the top. Month-and-year dates. Real job titles. No graphics carrying information.

It is plainer than a template, and it is not ugly. Good typography, consistent spacing and clear hierarchy make a single-column document look professional without breaking anything.

The PDF myth

PDFs parse well in every modern system, so the format is not the problem. A two-column PDF and a two-column Word file fail identically.

What matters is the structure inside the file. Send PDF for appearance stability, and keep a Word version for the employers and agencies that still ask for one.

When a designed document is right

When a human being is the first reader. A creative portfolio submission, a direct email to a hiring manager, a referral, a printed document handed over at an interview.

The practical answer is two versions: a clean one for applications, a designed one for people. It takes an hour to maintain both and it removes the trade-off entirely.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. A large share of our Chennai commissions are template repairs — the content is adequate and the layout is the reason nobody has read it.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
