Applying to TCS, Cognizant and Infosys in Chennai: what the screener actually checks

Chennai’s largest employers hire at volume, and volume hiring is structured hiring. A screener at a major IT services firm may look at two hundred résumés for one requisition, working from a checklist rather than an impression. What is on that checklist is not mysterious, and most rejected applications fail on it rather than on ability.

The checklist is roughly: does the designation map to our band, does the skill set match the requisition, is the notice period workable, and is the total experience consistent with the dates. A résumé that makes any of those four hard to determine is set aside, because two hundred others are easier to read.

Designation and band mapping

Large Indian IT firms run internal bands, and an external designation has to be mapped to one before a salary can be discussed. “Technical Lead” means different things at different companies, so the screener looks past the title for the evidence: team size, whether you owned delivery, client-facing or not.

State those explicitly rather than leaving them to inference. A line reading “Technical Lead — team of six, owned delivery for one client workstream, client-facing” is mapped in seconds. “Technical Lead” alone is guessed at, and guesses are conservative.

Project descriptions a technical panel can use

Every services résumé lists projects. The ones that survive describe the problem, your specific part, the technology and the outcome — in that order and in three lines. What fails is the format most candidates use:

  • Project name, client name, duration and a technology list with no description of the work
  • A paragraph describing the whole team’s scope with no indication of your part in it
  • Responsibilities written in the passive voice — “was involved in”, “was responsible for”
  • Six projects at equal length, so the significant one is indistinguishable from the trivial

A technical panel interviews from your project descriptions. If yours are vague, the questions become generic, and generic questions are harder to answer well than specific ones about work you actually did.

Notice period and availability

Chennai services hiring runs against start dates, and a ninety-day notice period is a real constraint on a requisition that needs filling in six weeks. Candidates routinely omit it, hoping to discuss it later. Screeners read the omission as ninety days anyway.

State it plainly, with any buyout arrangement you are willing to consider. It costs one line and moves you into the pile the recruiter can actually work with.

Consistency the verification team will check

Background verification at the major firms is thorough and slow, and discrepancies found there cancel offers after they have been made. Dates that do not match payslips, a designation inflated by one level, an overlapping employment period — all of these surface.

Write what the records will show. If your designation on paper differs from the work you actually did, state the official title and describe the real scope beside it. That reads as precision; the reverse reads as a discrepancy.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. We work with Chennai candidates applying into the large services firms every month, and the patterns above are what we see cost interviews.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
