Being passed over in Chennai: what a promotion résumé has to argue
An internal promotion application is the one document where the reader already knows what you do. Restating it is therefore worthless, and yet that is what most internal applications are: a summary of the current role, submitted to people who assigned it.
What the panel is deciding is different. They are asking whether you can hold the next scope, and the evidence for that is rarely in your job description. It is in the times you operated above your grade and nobody noticed enough to write it down.
Evidence of the next level, not the current one
Go through the last two years looking for moments where you did the job you are applying for. Decisions made without escalating. A junior colleague you effectively managed. A client conversation you handled that your manager would normally have taken. A problem you saw before anyone asked you to look.
Those are the document. The daily work of your current role is context, not argument.
The gap the panel is worried about
Every internal candidate has one visible weakness, and the panel has already discussed it. Pretending otherwise is the commonest mistake in internal applications — it reads as a lack of self-awareness, which is itself disqualifying at senior levels.
Name it, state what you have done about it, and move on. One paragraph. A candidate who says “I have not managed a budget before; here is how I have prepared and here is what I would do in the first ninety days” is far stronger than one who hopes it will not come up.
Written for readers who know you
This changes the register entirely. No introduction, no explanation of the company, no describing systems everyone in the room uses daily. Straight to the argument, with specifics they can verify by asking one colleague.
It also means every claim must be true in a way that survives someone who was there. An exaggeration on an external résumé is a risk; on an internal one it is a certainty of being caught.
If you have been passed over before
Address it. A second application that ignores the first failure reads as not having listened. If you were told to develop something, show what you did. If you were not told anything useful, say what you concluded and what changed.
Panels promote people who respond to feedback, and the application is the first evidence of whether you do.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. Internal promotion documents are a specific piece of writing, and we treat them differently from an external résumé — the audience, the register and the evidence are all different.
Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.
The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.
Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
