What your Chennai résumé does to your salary before you negotiate

By the time a Chennai recruiter calls you, the band has largely been decided. They have read the résumé, mapped your designation to their structure, estimated your scope, and formed a number. Negotiation then happens inside a range you never saw being set.

This is why understating scope is expensive. A résumé that describes six years of substantial work modestly gets mapped to the band the modest description implies, and no amount of skill in the salary conversation fully recovers that.

What sets the band

Four things, in roughly this order of weight:

  • The designation, read against the recruiter’s internal grade structure
  • Total years of relevant experience, computed from your dates
  • Scope signals — team size, budget, client exposure, geography
  • The current employer’s reputation as a payer

Three of those four are things you write. Only the fourth is fixed.

Scope signals candidates leave out

Almost every résumé we see in Chennai omits at least two of these, and each one moves the band:

  • Number of people you were responsible for, including indirect and matrixed reports
  • Budget or revenue you influenced, even where you did not own it outright
  • Whether you were client-facing, and with clients of what size
  • Geographies and time zones you supported
  • Whether you were the escalation point for anything

None of these is an exaggeration. They are facts most people consider too ordinary to mention, which is precisely why mentioning them is an advantage.

The expected-CTC field

Indian application forms ask for it and there is rarely a way around it. The practical answer is a range whose lower bound you would genuinely accept, with “negotiable based on the complete role” beside it.

A single figure sets a ceiling. A refusal to answer reads as difficult. A range with a stated basis reads as reasonable and keeps the conversation open.

Do not put your current salary on the résumé

Some Chennai candidates still do this, usually from an older template. It hands over your entire negotiating position before a conversation begins, and no employer needs it to decide whether to interview you.

If the form asks, answer the form. The document itself should not volunteer it.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. We write for the band you should be mapped to, which usually means restoring scope the candidate had left out rather than inflating anything.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
