One page or two: deciding résumé length for Chennai applications
Length is the question we are asked most often, and the answer is less about a rule than about what the reader can absorb. A Chennai recruiter reading two hundred applications gives each one between fifteen and forty seconds. Whatever is on page three is read by nobody except a panel that has already decided to interview you.
The practical thresholds: one page up to about five years, two pages from five to twenty, and three only for academic, medical and research CVs where nothing is omitted by convention. A fresher submitting two pages is padding, and an experienced professional submitting one is usually cutting scope that would have moved their salary band.
What to cut first
In this order, and most Chennai résumés have all of it:
- The declaration paragraph and signature line — nobody reads it
- Date of birth, marital status, father’s name, nationality, photograph, unless the employer has asked
- Hobbies, unless genuinely relevant to the role
- School results, once you have a degree and two years of work
- The objective statement, replaced by a summary of what you offer
- Any role older than fifteen years, compressed to one line
That list alone usually recovers three-quarters of a page, which can then hold the scope and numbers that actually move a decision.
What earns its space
Numbers, scope and outcomes. Team size, budget, revenue, users, volume, the target against the achievement. These are what a recruiter uses to place you, and they occupy remarkably little room.
A single well-written line — “Led a team of nine, owned a 4.2 crore delivery budget, reduced defect leakage from 6 per cent to 1.8” — does more than a paragraph of responsibilities.
Indian and American conventions differ
American practice favours one page well into a career. Indian practice accepts two comfortably and expects more detail per role. If you are applying to a US employer from Chennai, write to their convention; if to an Indian one, to this.
The mistake is applying one convention to both markets and being slightly wrong in each.
The academic and medical exception
These are CVs, not résumés, and length is determined by the record. A fifteen-page academic CV is normal; a two-page one suggests an early-career researcher regardless of actual standing.
But the same discipline applies inside them: nothing omitted, and nothing padded. Inflating a thin record is visible immediately to anyone who reads these professionally.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. Length is usually a symptom rather than the problem — a document is long because it is describing duties, and shortens naturally once it describes outcomes.
Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.
The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.
Chennai clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
