Writing an IT services resume for Chennai: what TCS, Cognizant and Zoho screen for
Chennai has one of the densest concentrations of IT services employment in India, and services hiring is not product hiring. A product company asks what you built. A services company asks what you delivered, for whom, under what engagement model, and whether the client renewed.
Resumes written for one and sent to the other are the single commonest mistake we see in this city. The same candidate needs two different documents.
What services hiring actually screens on
Project scale and duration, the client’s industry, your position in the delivery structure, and whether you were client-facing. A services recruiter is assessing whether you can be placed on an account tomorrow, which is a different question from whether you can code.
- Engagement model: fixed-bid, time and materials, managed services, staff augmentation
- Team structure: onsite, offshore, or the ratio between them
- Client industry, since domain knowledge is billable and transferable
- Whether you have been client-facing, and at what level
- Certifications, which services firms weight more heavily than product companies do
Domain is worth more than you think
In services, banking domain knowledge, insurance domain knowledge or retail domain knowledge commands a premium, because it reduces ramp time on a new account. Yet most Chennai IT resumes name only the technology and leave the client’s industry unstated.
Name it. “Three years on a US retail bank’s payments platform” is worth considerably more to a services recruiter than “three years Java development”, and it is the same work.
Where the technology belongs
Near the end, current, and honest. Leading with a long stack list is read as a senior engineer applying upward rather than an experienced delivery professional. It also dilutes the items you could genuinely be interviewed on.
List what you would be comfortable defending in a technical round. A list of passing acquaintance weakens the credible entries beside it.
Product-company applications need the other document
If you are moving from services to a product company — and in Chennai many people are — the emphasis inverts. Systems built, load carried, ownership of outcomes and decisions made replace engagement models and client names.
That is not a reformatting job. It is a different argument from the same facts, which is why we write it as a separate document rather than editing the first one.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory writes both versions. We interview for project scale, client domain, delivery structure and your actual position in it, because services professionals routinely describe substantial accounts in language that makes them sound like individual contributors.
For candidates moving to product companies we write the second document from the same interview, restated as ownership and outcomes. Clients moving from Chennai IT services to a product firm usually take both.
Every resume is parsing-clean, aligned to the advertisements you send us, and priced as a fixed figure agreed in writing before work starts.
