The Chennai fresher resume: what campus recruiters actually read

Chennai runs one of the largest campus recruitment seasons in the country. Anna University’s affiliated colleges alone put tens of thousands of engineering graduates into the same few weeks of hiring, and a recruiter screening that volume gives each resume a few seconds.

In those seconds they are looking for evidence, not enthusiasm. “Excellent communication skills, team player, quick learner” appears on almost every fresher resume in this city and is discounted on sight.

Marks stay, and stay near the top

For campus and off-campus fresher hiring, CGPA and percentage are screened on directly, and many Chennai employers still apply a cut-off. Omitting them is read as concealing them, which is worse than a modest number.

Education belongs near the top for a fresher, with the relevant coursework and the final-year project named. It moves down the page only once two years of work exist to replace it.

Write the project as work, not as a title

A final-year project described as a name and a date reads as coursework. The same project written as problem, approach, technology and result reads as experience — and it is the strongest material most freshers have.

Four lines: what the problem was, what you built, what you built it with, and what it achieved or demonstrated. That structure is what turns a college project into evidence.

Every claimed skill needs proof elsewhere on the page

If the skills section says Python, Python should be visible in a project, an internship or a certification further down. An unsupported skills list is the first thing an experienced reader discounts, and it drags the credible entries down with it.

What to cut

• Objective statements — the recruiter knows you want a job
• Declaration lines and signature blocks, which are a legacy convention
• Father’s name, marital status and full address; city is enough
• Long lists of unrelated online certificates, which read as activity rather than direction
• A second page. A two-page fresher resume is read as padding by anyone screening campus applications

The page that remains is shorter and considerably stronger.
