Freelancing in Chennai and applying for a job: writing the two together

A Chennai recruiter reading three years of freelance work has two questions, and both are unspoken. Was this a choice or a gap with a better name? And will this person stay, or leave the moment a good project appears?

A résumé that presents freelance work as a series of disconnected engagements answers neither. One that presents it as a practice — with clients, scale and continuity — answers both.

Structure it as one role, not many

List “Independent consultant” or your practice name as a single employment entry covering the whole period, with clients as projects beneath it. This does two things: it removes the visual appearance of job-hopping, and it gives the verification team a single period to confirm.

Under it, the three or four engagements that best match the role you are applying for. Not all of them — the small ones dilute the substantial ones.

Scale that a salaried reader can interpret

Freelance work is often described in terms that mean nothing to someone who has never bought it. Translate:

• Client sector and rough size, rather than the client name alone
• Engagement length and whether it was renewed, which signals satisfaction
• What you delivered and what it achieved, in the client’s terms
• Whether you worked alone or led others

A renewed twelve-month engagement with a mid-sized firm reads as substantial. “Various freelance projects” reads as filling time.

Explain the choice, briefly

One line in the summary. Whether it was deliberate independence, a family situation, a market that collapsed or a deliberate period of skill-building, the reader forms a theory regardless. Yours is better than theirs.

The corollary: say why you are returning to employment. “Looking for scale I cannot reach alone” is a real answer. Silence invites the assumption that the freelancing failed.

Gaps between engagements

Freelance records have quiet months. Presenting the period as one continuous practice absorbs most of them honestly — you were available and working, just not always billing.

What does not work is inventing engagements to fill the calendar. Verification in Indian corporates includes client reference checks for consulting periods more often than candidates expect.
