Writing a banking and finance resume that Chennai recruiters shortlist
Chennai’s financial sector is not Mumbai’s. It is built on NBFCs, small finance banks and old Chettiar-founded finance houses — Sundaram Finance, Equitas, Repco Home Finance, Cholamandalam, Shriram — alongside branch networks of every national bank and a growing back-office presence for foreign institutions.
That shapes what a resume has to prove. A Mumbai banking CV leads with deal value. A Chennai one leads with book quality, collection discipline and branch performance, because that is what the businesses here are actually judged on.
Content Factory writes banking and financial services resumes for candidates across Chennai, and this is what we have learned gets a document through to interview.
The five numbers a Chennai banking resume must carry
Finance hiring is numerically screened everywhere, but the specific numbers differ by institution type. For NBFC and small finance bank roles in Chennai, these five decide the shortlist.
- Book size. The portfolio you personally managed, in crores, with the product named — vehicle finance, LAP, gold loan, MSME, housing.
- Portfolio quality. Gross and net NPA on your book, with the starting position. A book you cleaned matters more than a clean book you inherited.
- Collection efficiency. Current collection percentage and what it was when you took over. This is the single most-checked figure in Chennai NBFC hiring.
- Disbursement. Monthly or annual disbursement against target, with attainment as a percentage over at least two years.
- Branch or team scope. Branches supervised, headcount, districts covered. Chennai institutions run dense branch networks across Tamil Nadu and scope places you immediately.
A resume that says “managed a large retail portfolio and improved collections” has said nothing. The same sentence with four figures in it survives the first cut.
What Chennai banks check that others do not
District-level knowledge. Tamil Nadu lending is regional. A candidate who has worked Coimbatore, Salem and Erode brings relationships a Chennai-only candidate does not, and NBFCs hire specifically for this. Name the districts.
Tamil language capability. For any customer-facing or collections role outside the metro, spoken and written Tamil is a working requirement rather than a nice addition. State it plainly in the skills line.
Audit and RBI inspection exposure. Which inspections you have faced, what was raised, what you remediated. Compliance-heavy employers weight this above sales numbers, and most candidates omit it entirely.
Core banking systems. Finacle, FLEXCUBE, BaNCS or the NBFC-specific LOS and LMS platforms you have used. Recruiters search these strings directly.
How Content Factory writes a Chennai banking resume
We start with a recorded conversation about the numbers, because banking candidates in Chennai consistently describe branch achievements in the first person and personal achievements in the passive. An interviewer separates the two within three questions, so the resume has to do it first.
Then we build the document in the order a credit or retail banking manager reads: scope and book at the top, portfolio quality next, then the operating record, with systems and compliance exposure stated rather than implied.
Every claim is written so it survives being asked about. If your NPA figure improved because the book shrank, we say so — because the interviewer will find out, and a candidate who framed it honestly is in a much stronger position than one who did not.
Difficult histories, handled
Banking careers carry things that need care. A branch that underperformed in a bad year. A portfolio that deteriorated after a policy change outside your control. A short tenure at an institution that restructured.
Content Factory writes each of these in one line, in your own words, in the resume itself. The alternative — leaving an unexplained gap or a conspicuously absent number — invites a worse assumption than the truth, and Chennai’s finance community is small enough that the truth is usually known anyway.
