Staff engineer or engineering manager? Two resumes, not one
A senior Bengaluru engineer reaches the point where two paths open: staff or principal engineer on the individual contributor track, or engineering manager on the people track. Most candidates send the same resume to both.
The panels are looking for opposite evidence. An IC panel wants technical depth and influence without authority. A management panel wants hiring, development and delivery through other people. A document that hedges between them satisfies neither.
What a staff engineer panel reads for
- Technical decisions with organisation-wide consequence
- Influence across teams you did not manage
- Depth: the problem only you could have solved, described properly
- Mentoring and raising the bar without formal authority
- Architecture you set that outlasted your involvement
The hardest of these to write is influence without authority, and it is the one the panel probes hardest. It needs a specific example with named resistance and how it was resolved.
What a management panel reads for
- Headcount, and how it changed while you held it
- Hiring: how many, at what bar, with what retention
- People you developed, and where they are now
- Delivery through the team rather than personally
- A difficult people decision, handled
That last one matters more than candidates expect. Every management panel asks about a performance problem or an exit, and a prepared honest answer distinguishes a manager from a senior engineer with reports.
The trap of writing both at once
A resume claiming deep technical ownership and significant people leadership in the same roles usually reads as inflated, because at most levels you cannot have done both fully at once. The panel discounts the whole document.
Choose the track per application. The facts stay the same; the emphasis and the ordering change completely.
Moving from management back to IC
Common in Bengaluru and entirely respectable, but it needs stating. An unexplained return to an IC title reads as a demotion; stated as a deliberate choice with a reason, it reads as self-knowledge.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory writes both tracks from one interview and tells you which to send where. It is the same career with two different arguments, and the choice is per application rather than permanent.
For the management version we work on the difficult people example specifically, because it is asked in every panel and improvising it is where strong candidates lose ground.
