Side projects on a Bengaluru engineering résumé: which ones help
Side projects can be the strongest thing on an early-career Bengaluru résumé or pure noise, and the difference is not the technology. It is whether anyone other than you has used the thing.
A reviewer opening your repository is asking one question: is this a solved problem, solved by this person, for someone? A tutorial follow-along answers no, however clean the code.
What helps
In descending order of value to a Bengaluru hiring manager:
- Something deployed with real users, however few, and maintained over time
- A merged contribution to a project other people depend on
- A tool you built to solve your own genuine problem, still in use
- A technical piece of writing that explains something difficult clearly
- A substantial implementation of something hard, even without users
Fifty people using something you built and kept running says more about you than a thousand lines of unused code.
What hurts
Tutorial projects — the to-do app, the weather dashboard, the clone built by following a video. Reviewers recognise these instantly and they dilute whatever else is on the page.
Also harmful: an abandoned repository with a last commit two years old, and a GitHub link to a profile with nothing in it. An empty profile is worse than no link.
How much space
For a fresher or someone with under two years, a real section — three projects described as work, with problem, approach and result. For anyone with five years of professional work, two lines at most.
Side projects displace professional evidence once you have it, and a senior résumé leading with a hobby project reads as someone whose work is not interesting enough to describe.
Make it inspectable
A README that explains what the thing does and why, in the first paragraph. A live link if it is deployed. Commit history that shows sustained work rather than a single dump.
Reviewers spend ninety seconds. A repository that requires archaeology gets none of them.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. For early-career Bengaluru engineers we usually spend as much time on which projects to lead with as on the résumé itself.
Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.
The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.
Bengaluru clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
