First-time engineering manager in Bengaluru: what the résumé has to change
The move from senior engineer to engineering manager is the hardest transition to write, because the evidence for it is invisible in a normal engineering résumé. Code shipped, systems designed, latency reduced — all of that argues for a staff engineer role, not a management one.
A Bengaluru hiring manager filling a management position is looking for something else entirely: whether you have made other people better, and whether you have made decisions where the outcome was not technical.
The evidence that actually counts
Nearly every senior engineer has some of this and almost none of them write it down:
- People you mentored, and what happened to them — promoted, grew into a specialism, stayed
- Interviews conducted, and whether you set or influenced the hiring bar
- On-call rotations you designed or improved
- Cross-team work where you negotiated rather than built
- A project you scoped and staffed rather than executed
- A conflict you resolved, or a decision you made that was unpopular and correct
Those six lines are the management résumé. The engineering achievements become supporting context.
Tech lead work, described as leadership
Many Bengaluru engineers have been tech leads without the title. Owning a workstream, breaking down a project, allocating work and reporting on it is management work by any definition.
Write it as such: team size, duration, what you were accountable for, and what shipped. “Tech lead” alone is read as senior engineer with extra meetings.
What to stop leading with
The stack. A management résumé that opens with a technology list signals a candidate who has not made the transition mentally, which is the exact thing the hiring manager is probing for.
Keep the technical credibility — one honest line, near the end, naming what you can still hold a conversation on. Managers who cannot are screened out too, so it belongs there, just not first.
Be honest about the gap
If you have never managed formally, say so and state what you have done instead. The hiring manager knows from your title anyway, and a candidate who addresses it directly is treated as self-aware rather than as concealing.
Many Bengaluru companies hire first-time managers deliberately. They are looking for evidence of the instinct, not proof of the experience.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. This is one of the commonest briefs we take in Bengaluru, and the work is almost entirely finding leadership evidence the candidate had not thought worth writing down.
Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.
The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.
Bengaluru clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
