Applying from Bengaluru to the United States: what the resume must resolve

More Bengaluru engineers apply to US employers than to any other overseas market, and most applications are discarded for reasons unconnected to ability: the resume is formatted for India, and the work authorisation position is left ambiguous.

Both are fixable in a single revision. Neither has anything to do with how good you are.

One page, and genuinely one page

US convention for most industry roles is one page to about eight years of experience. A three-page Indian-format resume is read as an inability to prioritise before the content is assessed.

This is the single largest formatting difference, and compressing without losing substance is the actual skill involved.

Remove what Indian resumes include and US ones do not

  • Photograph, date of birth, marital status, father’s name, full address
  • Declaration lines and signature blocks
  • Objective statements
  • Percentage marks for school-level education
  • Notice period, which US employers do not use

Several of these are unlawful for a US employer to consider, and including them creates awkwardness rather than information.

State the authorisation position plainly

H-1B requiring sponsorship, cap-exempt, already on a visa, or requiring nothing. Stated near the top in one line.

US employers screen on this early. Ambiguity is read as a complication and many recruiters simply move on rather than ask. The honest position, clearly stated, at least reaches the people who can act on it.

Explain your employers in one clause

A US hiring manager may not know your current employer however significant it is in India. “A top-five Indian IT services firm, 600,000 staff” costs eight words and completely changes the reading.

Same for qualifications: a first-class B.Tech from a well-regarded institution needs one line of context to land in North America.

Spelling, dates and units

US spelling, month-day-year ordering, dollars, and no lakh or crore. Small things, noticed immediately, and cumulatively they decide whether a reader thinks you understand the market.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory writes the US variant to American convention — one page, no personal details, authorisation stated, employers explained for an unfamiliar reader.

We compress without losing the evidence, which is the part clients find hardest to do themselves. Eight years on one page is a discipline rather than a deletion exercise.

The same applies to UK, Canadian, Australian and Gulf applications, each to its own convention. Quoted in rupees or US dollars, fixed in writing.
