Does your GitHub help your Bengaluru application? Usually not the way you think
Almost every Bengaluru engineering resume now carries a GitHub link, which means the link itself signals nothing. What matters is whether a hiring manager who clicks it finds something that improves their opinion.
Frequently they find the opposite: four tutorial follow-alongs, a half-finished clone, and a last commit from 2023. That is worse than no link, because it converts a neutral resume into a negative impression.
What actually helps
- A project other people use, with issues raised by strangers
- A merged contribution to a library your target company depends on
- A tool you built because your own work needed it, with a clear README
- Something with tests, because it signals professional habits
- A repository whose commit history shows sustained work rather than one weekend
One of these is worth more than twenty repositories. Pin it, and let the rest sit unpinned.
What quietly subtracts
Tutorial projects with the tutorial’s own structure intact. Abandoned clones of well-known products. Repositories with no README, so a reader cannot tell what they do in ten seconds. Forks with no commits of your own.
A hiring manager scanning your profile forms an impression in under a minute. Six weak repositories dilute one good one, and unpinning is free.
The README is the whole thing
Nobody reads your source code in a screening pass. They read the README: what it does, why you built it, how to run it, and what you learned. A project with a clear README and modest code beats sophisticated code with no explanation.
Where the link belongs on the resume
On the contact line, working, and pointing at your profile rather than at a specific repository. Then name the one project in the resume body, in the same bullet format as professional work, with what it achieved.
That way the reader knows what to look at before they click, rather than arriving at a list and deciding for themselves.
If you have nothing worth showing
Leave it off. An absent GitHub is neutral for most Bengaluru roles; a weak one is not. And then, if you want it, build one genuine thing over a few weekends — one is sufficient.
How Content Factory writes it
Content Factory looks at your GitHub before writing, and we will tell you honestly whether to link it. Several clients have improved their application by removing the link rather than adding to it.
Where there is something worth showing, we write it into the resume body as work — problem, approach, result — rather than leaving it as a URL for the reader to investigate.
Fixed price in writing, and this assessment is part of the technical resume package rather than an extra.
