Bengaluru engineers applying to global product companies: the résumé the loop expects

A résumé that works for Indian IT services actively harms an application to a global product company, and the reason is structural. Services résumés are built to demonstrate breadth — many projects, many technologies, many clients. Product companies screen for depth and ownership, and read breadth as shallowness.

The document passes through two very different readers. A recruiter screens for pattern match in under a minute. If it advances, a hiring committee reads it again at the end against the interview feedback, looking for consistency. Both stages punish vagueness.

What the recruiter screen looks for

Roughly four signals, none of which are technology lists:

  • Scale — users, requests, data volume, or money the system handled
  • Ownership — did you design and build it, or contribute to someone else’s design
  • Impact — a number that changed because of what you did
  • Progression — increasing scope across roles rather than lateral movement

A résumé with all four on the first half-page advances. One that opens with a nine-line technology inventory usually does not.

What to cut from a services résumé

The conventions that serve you in services hiring work against you here:

  • The technology matrix table — replace with a short honest line near the end
  • Client names without a description of what you built for them
  • Six projects at equal weight — keep two or three, described properly
  • Certifications that are attendance rather than achievement
  • Declaration, date of birth, marital status, father’s name, photograph

That last group is standard on Indian templates and reads as unfamiliarity to a global reader. It also occupies space the evidence needs.

Ownership stated precisely

Product companies probe ownership within two questions, so overstating it fails quickly and expensively. Write what is true: designed, built, owned in production, on call for; or contributed a component to a design someone else set.

Honest contribution described well beats inflated ownership every time, because the inflated version collapses in the first technical round.

The hiring committee reads it again

At the end of the loop, a committee that has not met you reads the résumé alongside the interviewers’ notes. Claims that the interviews did not support stand out sharply at that stage, and that is where offers are lost after successful interviews.

So the document has to be defensible, not merely attractive. Every number should have a basis you can explain twice, three weeks apart, consistently.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. Bengaluru is where we do most of our engineering résumé work, and converting a services-format document into a product-company one is the commonest brief we receive.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Bengaluru clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
