Startup equity on a Bengaluru résumé: what to say and what to leave out

Bengaluru résumés carry more startup history than any other Indian city’s, and most handle it badly in one of two directions. Either the venture is inflated into something it was not, or it is minimised into a vague line that invites suspicion.

Recruiters here have read thousands of these. They know what a seed-stage company of fourteen people looks like, and they respect an accurate account of one far more than an ambitious account of nothing.

A company that shut down

Say so, with a reason and a date. “Company wound down in March 2025 when the Series A did not close” is one line and it closes the subject. An unexplained end is the thing that actually harms you, because the reader supplies a worse explanation.

What you learned belongs in the interview, not the résumé. One line on the outcome is sufficient.

An acquisition

State the acquirer and whether you stayed. Both matter: an acqui-hire and a strategic acquisition are different events, and staying through integration is itself a credential.

Do not imply the acquisition was larger than it was. Bengaluru is small enough that people know, and being caught overstating a deal is worse than the deal having been modest.

Equity and ESOPs

Generally leave the numbers off the résumé. Percentage holdings and strike prices are negotiation material, not screening material, and putting them on the document only sets expectations you may not want set.

What does belong is the fact of early employment — “employee number seven” or “joined pre-revenue” — because that is a statement about risk taken and scope held, which is genuinely relevant.

Scale, honestly and in real numbers

Users, revenue, headcount, funding raised. Small true numbers are stronger than large vague phrases, and “grew to significant scale” is read as having grown to very little.

If the numbers are genuinely small, lead with the scope instead: what you owned end to end at twenty-six, which you would not have owned at a large company for another decade.

How Content Factory writes it

Content Factory is a writing studio in Chennai, and résumés are one of the things we produce. We write a lot of Bengaluru startup records, and the work is nearly always removing the vagueness rather than adding shine.

Every commission begins with your current document and two or three advertisements you are genuinely targeting. We interview briefly for the numbers behind each claim, because most candidates describe substantial work in language that makes it sound small.

The document is rebuilt single-column with standard headings and month-and-year dates, so applicant tracking systems parse it cleanly, and the wording is aligned to those advertisements without inventing experience you do not have. We will not promise an ATS score — there is no published scoring model and any number quoted to you is invented.

Bengaluru clients receive editable Word and PDF within three to five working days, with one revision round. The price is fixed in writing before work begins and the work is yours outright.
