Contract and payroll roles in Bengaluru: writing them so they count

A large share of Bengaluru technology work is done on third-party payroll, and the résumés that come out of it look worse than the experience was. Four contracts in five years, each listed as a separate employer, reads as instability even when the work was continuous and the client was the same throughout.

The fix is presentational and entirely honest: show the continuity that actually existed.

Show the client, not just the vendor

The standard format buries what matters. Write it the other way round: the client you worked for, with the payroll arrangement noted.

“Senior Engineer — [Client], via [Staffing firm], Jan 2023 to present” tells the reader who you actually worked for. The vendor name alone tells them nothing about the work.

Group consecutive contracts

Where you stayed with one client across renewals or vendor changes, present it as one continuous period with the change noted. That is what happened, and splitting it into three entries misrepresents it downwards.

Where the client changed but the vendor did not, group under the vendor with clients as projects beneath.

Explain the arrangement once

A short line in the summary: “Five years of Bengaluru product engineering, largely on contract engagements with [sector] clients”. That frames everything below it and removes the job-hopping reading.

And state whether you are now looking for permanent employment. Employers ask, and the answer affects whether they treat you as a serious candidate for a full-time role.

What contracting demonstrates

Contractors ramp faster, work with less onboarding, and have usually seen more codebases than a permanent peer of the same age. Those are genuine advantages and no contract résumé we see mentions them.

Say it once, in the summary, with evidence — time to first contribution, number of environments worked in, renewals earned. A renewed contract is a satisfaction signal and should be stated as one.
