Moving into Bengaluru tech from a non-technical career
Bengaluru attracts more career switchers into technology than anywhere in India — from teaching, banking operations, mechanical engineering, defence, hospitality. Most write their resume as though the previous career were an embarrassment to be got past quickly.
That is the error. Eight years of operational experience is an asset to a product team, provided it is described in language a technology hiring manager recognises.
The summary carries the argument
Three or four lines stating what you are moving to, what in your record supports it, and why now. This is the only part guaranteed to be read, so the case for the switch belongs there rather than being discovered on page two.
Translate, do not discard
A teacher’s classroom management is stakeholder management. A bank operations lead has run process improvement and compliance. A mechanical engineer has worked to specification and tolerance. The work does not change; the vocabulary does.
This is genuinely hard to do for yourself, because your own experience is described in the only terms you have ever used for it.
Evidence the switch has already begun
A certification, a course finished, a freelance project, an internal tool you built at your current job. Anything that shows trajectory rather than intention. This is what separates a credible switcher from a hopeful one.
The internal project is the strongest version and the most overlooked: automation you built for your own team is professional software experience, whatever your job title said.
Bootcamp background, owned
Bengaluru hiring managers have seen many bootcamp graduates and have no general objection. State it as the transition it was, with the projects and any professional work since. Concealing it reads worse than owning it.
Expect and address the pay question
A switch often involves a step back in seniority or salary. Stated in the summary as a deliberate choice, it reads as commitment. Left unstated, a hiring manager assumes something went wrong.
A hybrid format, not a functional one
A skills-led section above a normal chronology. A fully functional resume with no dates is read as concealment by every recruiter in this market.
